Feeding Sites Selection of Long-billed Plover in Winter at the Middle Reaches of Jialing River
From December 2009 to February 2010, feeding sites selection of long-billed plover Charadrius placidus in winter was studied at the middle reaches of Jialing River by quadrat sampling method. There were very significant differences in variables, such as type of groundmass, biomass of soil animals, the ratio of open ground, the distance to water edge and slope degree, between feeding site plots ( n = 62 ) and control ones ( n = 62 ) ( Mann-Whitney test, P < 0. 01) . The result of logistic regression analysis showed that the ratio of open ground contributed mostly to the feeding sites selection of long-billed plover, and then followed by slope degree and biomass of soil animals. Furthermore, there were significant difference in distance from human disturbance and type of groundmass between feeding sites in canalized river reach and natural one ( Mann-Whitney test, P <0. 05) , which indicated long-billed plover had adapted to the environment of canalized river reach to some extent. In brief, long-billed plover prefer to feeding in the washlands where are rich in food, with gentle slope degree and near the water. Therefore, it is important for long-billed plover to protect the washland of the lialing River.
