Camera-Trapping-Based Preliminary Survey on Large and Medium-Sized Mammal Diversity in the Jiulong Area of Gongga Mountain National Nature Reserve,Sichuan
As an indispensable part of ecosystem, species diversity and population size of large and medium-sized mam-mals are important indicators to reflect the quality of ecological environment. From 2019 to 2021,camera-trapping was used to monitor the large and medium-sized mammals in the Jiulong area of Gongga Mountain National Nature Reserve(Sichuan Province,China).A total of 90 cameras were set up with 71 cameras in normal operation, and 1 926 indepen-dent and effective photos of large and medium-sized mammals were obtained during the 14 495 camera working days.In to-tal,20 species of large and medium-sized mammals belonging to 4 orders and 12 families were recorded. In addition to the class Ⅰ nationally key protected wild animal, forest musk deer(Moschus berezovskii),there were 13 class Ⅱ nationally key protected wild animals.Notably, the red muntjac(Muntiacus vaginalis)was newly recorded in the area. The top three large and medium-sized mammal species with high relative abundance index(RAI)were tufted deer(Elaphodus cephalo-phus)(RAI=8.058),Chinese serow(Capricornis milneedwardsii)(RAI=1.352)and blue sheep(Pseudois nayaur)(RAI= 1.338).Furthermore,33 cameras recorded human activity, mainly grazing and gathering, indicating a high level of hu-man disturbance in the area. This study can provide a scientific basis for the inventory of large and medium-sized mammal species diversity and the management of protected areas in this region.
