An Alien Reptile Species,Hemidactylus tenkatei,Newly Recorded in Zhuhai City,Guangdong
A total of five Hemidactylus specimens were collected during the herpetological investigation conducted in Zhu-hai City,Guangdong Province,China in September 2023.The specimens have a combination of the following characters:snout-vent length 42.1-65.2 mm;9-11 supralabials,8-9 infralabials;tubercles large and keeled,16 or 17 longitudinal tubercle rows at mid dorsum;7 or 8 precloacal-femoral pores on each thigh separated medially by four non-pore-bearing scales;2 or 3 postcloacal tubercles on each side.Based on morphological comparison and phylogenetic analysis of ND2 gene for Hemidactylus species, these specimens were confirmed as H.tenkatei,a first record in China. The classification status of H.tenkatei and H.brookii had been determined recently using morphological re-examinations,by which H.tenka-tei was recognized as a full species.H.brookii was previously recorded in Hong Kong,Macau and Taiwan,China, and had formed a naturalized population. However, due to the lack of molecular vouchers,it is unable to confirm whether the spe-cies occurred in China is H.tenkatei or not.Currently,H.tenkatei has established reproductive populations in Zhuhai, their population status and ecological effects on native species should be further studied to determine the biosecurity threat potential.
