Taxonomic Review of Planarians from China with a Key to the Families
Planarians are the earliest tri-embryonic animals belonging to the phylum Platyhelminthes with great evolution-ary significance.Planarians are also important environmental indicators and model animals for regenerative biology.Pla-narianology has become one of the active research fields in the world because of their extraordinary regenerative ability.Al-though planarians distributed worldwide with rich diversity, the taxonomy research of them in China developed relatively slowly. In recent years, research groups of China have made several progresses on the taxonomy of planarians. However, there are still shortcomings in the investigation and research scope.Obviously,a lot of work still needs to be carried out in further.Herein,we summarized the history of taxonomic research and the current situation, introduced the new classifica-tion system on high taxa, and updated the checklist of planarian from China. The results indicated that there were 131 pla-narian species/subspecies belonging to 2 subphylums,7 orders,26 families and 44 genera.A key to the families of planar-ians from China are compiled firstly from China. This study contributes to the classification and phylogeny of planarian, and the research on environmental monitoring and regenerative medicine.
