Breeding Practice for Breaking Through the Bottleneck of Yield Potential by Using Synthetic Hexaploid Wheat
[Objective]Synthetic hexaploid wheat is a new type of hexaploid wheat that developed by sci-entists using the hybridization and chromosome doubling of tetraploid wheat and diploid Aegilops tauschii simulating the evolution process of wheat.Synthetic hexaploid wheat combines the excellent traits of both parents and can be used as a bridge to improve modern wheat.[Method]A review of over 80 years of wheat breeding history in Sichuan Province was conducted, and the methods and techniques for utilizing synthetic wheat to achieve yield breakthroughs were analyzed. It is hoped that this review will provide ref-erence for further utilization of wheat relatives for wheat breeding.[Result]By using the breeding meth-ods of the limited backcrossing with large populations and the recombinant inbred line to improve the pri-mary synthetic wheat and its derivative lines,a new variety Chuanmai42(CM42)and its derivative vari-ety Chuanmai104 with a yield increase of nearly 30%were bred.Chuanmai42 and its derivatives have maintained the yield level of Sichuan wheat for more than 20 years.[Conclusion]Germplasm explora-tion and breeding method innovation are effective ways to achieve new breakthrough of yield potential.
