Effects of Tree Species on Soil Physical Properties——A Common Garden Experiment of Seven Subtropical Tree Species
[Objective]By investigating the impact of tree species variation on soil physical properties, this study is aimed to provide theoretical basis for optimizing tree species selection and soil improvement strategies in subtropical artificial forests.[Method]The experiment focused on seven subtropical tree species, namely Cinnamomum septentrionale,Alnus cremastogyne,Cinnamomum longepaniculatum,Cinnamomum japonicum,Cinnamomum camphora,Toona ciliate and Toona sinensis.A common garden was established on a location with a uniform climatic conditionse, soil development and management his-tory.After 5 years of site establishment(2015-2020),the changes in soil bulk density, total porosity, firmness, and shear strength across different layers(20-30 cm)of artificial forests with tree species,as well as the adjacent abandoned land,layers(0-10,10-20 and 20-30 cm)were measured.[Result]① The stands of C.septentrionale,C.longepaniculatum,C.japonicum and C.camphora exhibited lower soil bulk density and higher soil total porosity than other stands in the 0-10 cm soil layer.② Tree species significantly influenced the soil bulk density in the 0-30 cm depth, soil compaction and soil total poros-ity in the 0-10 cm and 20-30 cm depth, and soil shear strength in 20-30 cm depth.③With the increase of soil depth, there was an increase in soil bulk density, soil compaction and soil shear strength in-creased in the 0-30 cm soil layer, while soil total porosity decreased.Soil bulk density, soil compaction, soil shear strength, and soil total porosity varied from 1.22 to 1.54 g/cm3,143.9 to 335 N/cm3,0.49 to 2.25 kg/cm2,and 47.26%to 52.55%,respectively.④The interaction between tree species and soil layer significantly influenced the soil total porosity, while the soil layer itself significantly affected the soil bulk density, total porosity, compaction and shear strength.[Conclusion]These results suggest that tree spe-cies improves soil physical and chemical properties by altering litter inputs and root activities.Further-more,soil physical properties of the common garden can be improved by camphor plants.
