Following The 2011-2015 Archaeological Work Plan of Sanxingdui Site, from December 2015 to June 2016,Sichuan Province Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and Sanxingdui Museum,Guanghan,Sichuan conducted an archaeological excavation on the southern side of the south wall of Yueliangwan small town at Sanxingdui site, found a total of 3 ash ditches,2 pits and 14 ash pits.It is basically confirmed that this site is the south city moat of Yueliangwan small town at Sanxingdui site. The moat was constructed during the fourth phase of Erlitou and the lower level period of Erligang at the latest, and it is likely that it was still in use during the second phase of Yinxu. The identification of the southern moat of Yueliangwan small town also further clarifies the nature of the gap between the north and south sections of the western city wall as a water gate. The water gate connects the outer moat of the western city wall of Sanxingdui with the southern moat of Yueliangwan small town, and may further extend eastward to the eastern moat of the city wall of Yueliangwan and the Cangbaobao moat, forming a well-developed waterway system inside and outside the ancient city of Sanxingdui, which may have served both defense and water transportation functions. This discovery further deepens the understanding of the settlement structure and water transportation system of the Sanxingdui site.
