The epitaph unearthed from the joint burial tomb of Zhao Bingran and his wives records his life and the process of relocation and joint-burying of his tomb in the Jiange County of Guangyuan City,Sichuan Province.Zhao Bingran served as the Minister of War during the reign of Emperor Jiajing of the Ming Dynasty. On the basis of previous studies, the author corrects and supplements Zhao Bingran's family lineage and official career, and makes up for the insufficiency in the epitaph with historical materials. There are some inaccuracy and exaggerations in the epitaph content, such as his ancestral line and counter-insurgency when he served as the Provincial Censor in Yunnan. Finally, the epitaphs of Zhao Bingran and his father Zhao Song,as well as various historical literature are comprehensively used to portray the life and career chronology of Zhao Bingran,in order to provide a clear insight of his time and the complex historical background, which contributes to the study of the costal defense construction and the war against Japanese pirates in the southeastern region during the mid-late Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty,as well as the research of frontier defense against the Mongols and Tatars in the north.
