The No.3 pit in the sacrificial area of the Sanxingdui site is located on the right bank terrace of the Mamu River in the southern part of the ancient city of Sanxingdui in Guanghan,Sichuan, situated between the No.1 and No.2 pits excavated in 1986.From January to October 2021,Sichuan Province Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and Shanghai University jointly conducted excavations in the No.3 pit.The pit has an almost rectangular shape, covering an area of approximately 14.17 square meters. The deposit within the pit can be divided into three layers from top to bottom:fill soil, ash, and artifacts at the bottom of the pit.Preliminary statistics show that a total of 2686 artifacts were unearthed from the pit, including bronze vessels, jade objects, gold items, pottery, and elephant tusks, featuring precious cultural relics such as a kneeling bronze figure holding a Zun(尊)vessel on head,a large bronze mask,a bronze altar,a bronze sacred tree,a bronze round-mouthed square Zun,a gold mask, jade Zhang(璋),and jade Cong(琮)with sacred tree patterns.Carbon-14 dating indicates that there is a 95.4%probability that the burial date of the No.3 pit falls within the range of 1117 to 1012 BC.The No.3,No.2,No.7,and No.8 pits contain different parts of a same artifact, indicating that they were buried at the same time. The No.2 and No.3 pits are particularly similar and can be referred to as"twin pits".Based on the current findings,it can be inferred that these pits were burial pits for sacrificial artifacts.
