The stone beast unearthed on the northeast side of Tianfu Square in Chengdu,Sichuan Province is carved out of a single piece of red sandstone, which has good overall homogeneity in the initial state. However, its cementitious material is prone to absorbing water and swelling, which can easily damage the rock structure of red sandstone in humid and freezing environments.Coupled with the later stratum burying and cement pollution disturbance, the material foundation of this artifact is sensitive and fragile. After being unearthed, the preservation environment of the artifact is completely different, therefore the material may undergo physical, chemical, and biological changes.Without pre-judgment and control of these changes, deterioration of the artifact is inevitable. In order to ensure its safe, stable, and long-term preservation,it is necessary to conduct in-depth research on its preservation status and investigate and control the potential risk points of disease. This article proposes a new data research method for evaluating the preservation condition of the stone beast unearthed from Chengdu Tianfu Square.Using statistical theory to process data,we obtain their distribution characteristics, central tendency, and volatility, and thus identify the sudden changes in the deterioration of cultural relics, achieving the purpose of pre-controlling risks. The numerical trend displayed on the non-linear fitting continuous surface does not represent the data series, but represents the deviation of the actual level relative to the average level. This method can quickly find points on the surface of cultural relics that are different from other parts, which may be areas with high risk of deterioration.Accurate assessment of the preservation condition of cultural relics helps to prepare for the next step of developing appropriate protection plans. The study of distribution characteristics such as dispersion, central tendency, and skewness of test values can not only provide an understanding and evaluation of the current condition of cultural relics, but also partially reflect the influence of preservation experience on cultural relics. We can continue to explore the possibility of applying such methods.
