A Field Test of Integrated Bay Scallop-Sea Cucumber Raft Co-culture
In order to explore the feasibility of the integrated culture model of bay scallop(Argopecten irradians)-sea cucumber(Apostichopus japonicus)raft,a raft cage co-culture trial of bay scallop-sea cucumber was conducted in Langwokou,Laoting County and Xinkaikou,Changli County,Hebei Province from May 19 to November 19 in 2022.The trial was divided into two phases:in the first stage,scallop grow-out cages(mesh size of 2.5 cm)coated with 7 mesh(mesh size of 3 mm)net bags,monoculture of bay scallop and sea cucumber seedlings.Bay scallops with shell height of about 0.5 cm,large sea cucumber(30 ind./kg)was farmed at density of five individuals and three individuals per layer,and small sea cucumber(100 ind./kg)at density of 15 individuals,10 individuals and five individuals per layer.In the second phase,bay scallops and sea cucumber were monoculture and polyculture trials on August 19 in 2022.The bay scallop with shell height of about 2 cm was reared at each layer of about 40 individuals.The sea cucumber was monocultured as the same density as in the first stage;In polyculture,however,large size(20 ind./kg)sea cucumber was farmed at density of two individuals and one individual per layer,and small size sea cucumber(60 ind./kg)was farmed at density of two individuals and three individuals per layer.The results showed that the sea cucumber had poor body weight and specific growth rate with the increase in culture density,with significantly lower body weight in the large-size sea cucumber with two individuals per layer than that in one individual per layer group(P<0.05)in polyculture mode,and the specific growth rate was shown to be significantly lower in five individuals per layer group than that in the three individuals per layer group(P<0.05),without significant difference between the polyculture mode and the control groups(monoculture mode)in the two seas(P>0.05).The findings indicated that the raft culture model of bay scallop and sea cucumber did not affect the growth of bay scallop,and the body weight and specific growth rate of sea cucumber was improved by reducing the density.
