Geography,Agglomeration Economy and Long Term Evolution of Population Spatial Distribution
Based on the prefecture-level population data from 1776 to 2010,this paper examines the evolution and driving forces of China's population spatial distribution from the perspectives of geography and agglomeration economy. The results show that:(1)whether in the early feudal agricultural society or the modern industrial society, the spatial distribution of China's population is uneven, and with the beginning of modern industrialization, the degree of inequality has further intensified;(2)theoretical and empirical analysis shows that physical geography and agglomeration economy are important factors affecting the uneven spatial distribution of popula-tion.At the same time, the relative importance of these two factors also changed with time.Geo-graphical factors dominated in the early stage. After the start of modern industrialization, the role of agglomeration economy became increasingly prominent. This paper holds that the agglomeration of population in space is the result of economic and natural laws. The government should try to get rid of the institutional factors that hinder the flow of population, encourage the free flow of population, and give full play to the role of economic growth pole of metropolitan area with big cities as the center,so as to achieve high-quality economic development.
