The Influence of Clan Culture on the Non-farm Employment of Rural Women
Based on the data from China Family Panel Studies(CFPS),this paper studies the influence of clan culture on the non-farm employment of rural women from the micro level. The study finds that the greater the intensity of clan culture and the higher the clan diversity are the more negative to rural women's participation in non-farm employment. The results of the heterogeneity analysis show that the clan culture has no significant effect on the non-farm employment of the unmarried women, but has a significant negative effect on the married women. Its negative effect on women of reproductive age is significantly stronger than that on women of non-reproductive age.In addition, there are regional differences in the influence of clan culture.Clan culture in southern China significantly reduces the non-farm employment probability of rural women, while clan culture in northern China has no significant effect. In terms of the mechanisms, this paper proves that clan culture restricts rural women's participation in non-farm employment by influencing fertility behavior, investment in education, and family division of labor. This paper also further explores whether the clan culture affects the location of rural women's non-farm employment. The results show that although clan culture is negative to non-farm employment for rural women,it is positive to cross-county employment for women who have achieved non-farm employment. It is a long-term and gradual process to promote rural women's non-farm employment, and it is necessary to actively guide the culture, constantly improve the rural social security system, and give full play to the positive role of the informal system.
