In the context of social modernization, declining birthrates, and population aging, profound changes have taken place in the form, structure, relationship, and function of Chinese urban and rural families.Among them,multi-generational family relationships have become more and more important.By expanding the definition of family, based on the survey data of 50 urban and rural multi-generational family networks, the social network analysis method is used to conduct empirical analysis on the emotional bonding types and structural characteristics of multi-generational families. The research has three main findings:one is that the emotional bonding of multi-generational families has a networked structure, and is mainly multi-centered and dual-centered;the second is the number of emotional bonding centers, the balance of intergenerational distribution, and the balance of gender distribution have a positive correlation with the degree of closeness of emotional bonding;third, most families have a higher degree of closeness of emotional bonding and have a higher degree of intergenerational equality, gender equality, and patrilineal andmatrilineal equality in emotional status. These characteristics reflect the historical progress of contemporary Chinese family relations and also represent the mainstream trend of the development of multi-generational family relations.
