Abstract
Taking the Lychee Bay Canal in Sai Kwan,Guangzhou as a subject of observation, this essay looks at the spatial relationship between the waterway and the waterfront buildings with reference to historical images and texts. The disappearance of the canal tides has changed the height gap between buildings and water level, and the distance between buildings and the riverfront.Hence, the spatial connection between people, water, and architecture has become relaxed recently. The canal has leapt from a natural waterway into an artificial one,and from a mere working river into a tourist sight. The design firm,Urban Elephant Architects, has completed a number of projects along the Lychee Bay Canal, promising recent innovative ups and downs.
