Abstract
In 1864,the first public food market was established by Conseil Municipal in Shanghai.By the time of the Communist victory, there were 22 municipally run food markets citywide. The article first analyzes the distribution and site selections of Shanghai's public indoor market in the century from 1843 to 1943.Then,through case studies,it analyzes the four main spatial forms and standardized designs of public indoor markets. Finally,it discusses the sanitation management and sanitary standards for such indoor markets. The article points out that these markets were important municipal facilities in Shanghai back then, not so much as imported types of structures as products of urbanization drive;the appearances of indoor markets fully demonstrate the advanced municipal management and lifestyle originated in the West.As a dual-attribute space, these markets have gradually helped citizens form good urban habits, such as pursuits for order, hygiene, neatness, and contract-binding in the process of providing food supplies and commodity trading, and have instilled into them a preliminary understanding of municipal administration.
