欧文·琼斯《装饰的语法》是设计史和建筑史在讨论19世纪时常常提及的名作.文章简述了早期现代建筑史学建构中该书的地位和当代设计史与建筑史对它的认识,介绍了该书的成书背景、出版、印刷技术和来源,对书中提出的建筑与装饰原理37条主张进行分析,并探讨书中这些主张与建筑的关系.文章进而指出,琼斯在书中构建了建筑-建造-装饰的层级关系,以"自然""几何""建造性"等术语形成所谓普遍原理,并在最后提出了该书在建筑学领域几条可能的研究路径.
Abstract
Owen Jones'The Grammar of Ornament(1856)is a frequently referred to masterpiece in design history and architectural history.This paper briefly introduces the role this book played in early modern architectural historiography and its reception in contemporary design and architectural history.It goes through its background,publication,printing techniques,origins,and sources.Then,it focuses on analyzing the 37 propositions advocated in the book as the principles of architecture and ornament,to examine the relationship between these propositions and architecture.It aims to point out the hierarchy that Jones constructed between architecture,construction,and ornament,as well as his universal principles formed with"nature","geometry"and"constructive".Finally,this paper suggests possible research paths for this book in architecture.
