Abstract
Just like people and societies are changing, buildings should be able to change alike. This paper explores a new perspective on changing requirements in building design, focusing on adaptability and material mobility. It discusses a method to conceptualize a building through its porosity and permeability to understand the spaces and connections it offers. Also,it incorporates the mobility of building components and highlights the potential for reusing and repurposing. The concept emphasizes a more precise understanding of resource use and a distinction between permanent and changeable elements and spaces of a building using various examples. Most parts of the load-bearing skeleton do not require demountable, reusable components since they can remain in place. However, all other softer layers should be made suitable for future reuse.Architectural and engineering planning are thus linked even more closely, extending into long-term planning.
