Abstract
Focusing on the micro-politics of urban heritage, this paper examines the transition from physical decay to social vibrancy in urban spaces. It reflects on three key concepts.First,it interprets the duality of the weathering process of buildings:while the physical efficiency of structures decreases under natural forces, their ecological and metaphorical potentials are on the rise.Second, the paper introduces the concept of porosity, taking into account the involvement of social processes. It posits that urban heritage areas are porous spaces where material existence intertwines with historical and social dimensions.Third,it proposes that non-intervention or counter-preservation is also a form of conservation, emphasizing attention to decay processes, ecology, and social aspects. This paper argues that the architectural porosity approach can be an alternative voice in the discussion of urban heritage, thus bringing into the discussion the"material-social"cycles that have not been fully unpacked in conventional heritage revitalization practices.
