Abstract
The interlocution between Ruan Xing and Zhuang Shen concerns the fundamental problems in the remodeling and the adaptive reuse of the School of Design Building,Shanghai Jiao Tong U niversity.They include the legacies of spatial organization from both the East and the West,the compatibility of new and old parti of the building,and the"trade-offs"between"thickness"and"efficiency"in design.Ruan laments that modern architects often neglect the fine architectural legacies of history and tradition,pursuing instead extreme utilitarianism and efficiency.He believes that the"thickness"of architecture reflects the complexity and diversity of design and it conveys a profound understanding of life and culture.Zhuang on the other hand discusses from a design perspective the potential increase of"thickness"in the remodeling process to meet various demands.Together they explore the ways in which cultural content may be created and felt through architecture in the homogeneous suburban environment,reflecting at the same time on the drawbacks of the overly instrumentalized"people-oriented"design doctrine in our time.They distinguish between two kinds of adaptability:the environment's adaptability to people's needs and people's adaptability to the environment.These two types of adaptability interact in architectural design,together they may produce charged and vital architectural forms.
