Restatement in PhotographyPhotos of Robert Maillart's Bridges in J.Conzett and M.Linsi's Landschaft und Kunstbauten
This paper first reviews the photographic reception of Robert Maillart's bridges since the modern movement, and introduces the exhibition and photo book Landschaft und Kunstbauten(Landscape and Structures,2010)by the Swiss engineer Jürg Conzett and photographer Martin Linsi. It then analyzes the photos of Pùnt da Suransuns on the book cover, and illustrates Conzett's new understanding of the Swiss engineering tradition in terms of"Kunstbauten"and"Landschaft."Then, focusing on the photos of three Maillart's bridges selected in this book,it examines Conzett's restatement of Maillart's works through Linsi's photography and his contemporary Swiss vernacular interpretation that is varied from the canonical Western modernist perspective. Finally,it discusses Linsi's photography and their field research, particularly the relationship between the final products and the technical aspects such as equipment, shooting, and development,to point out the direct and fundamental roles that the aesthetic and technical requirements of photography played in conveying architectural/engineering concepts in this case.
