Numerical simulation study on mechanical properties of interlayer heterogeneous natural gas hydrate sediments
To investigate the mechanical properties and shear failure mechanisms of sandstone reservoirs with gas hydrate interlayers,we employed the discrete element method to prepare sandstone reservoir samples containing gas hydrate interlayers and conducted a series of biaxial shear tests. The results indicate that there is a reduction in the overall strength of the sandstone reservoir when the natural gas hydrate interlayer saturation is below 15%and the interlayer thickness is less than 1/5 and that the hydrate interlayer can strengthen the entire sample when the saturation of the hydrate interlayer surpasses 35%and the interlayer thickness exceeds 1/2.The failure mode of the hydrate-bearing interlayer differs from that of the overlying and underlying layers. The failure of the hydrate-bearing interlayer is primarily attributed to the breakdown of cementation between the hydrate particles and surrounding particles.
