A Corpus-based Study of the Micro-lexical Features of the English Versions of Liaozhai Zhiyi
Based on the data of vocabulary number,average word length,word length,word frequency and word density,it is found that the five English versions of Liaozhai Zhiyi have different micro-lexical fea-tures.The vocabulary parameter values of Sidney L.Sondergard's version are generally high,with a wide range of word selection dimensions,strong vocabulary diversity,and a large amount of information.The data value of Herbert Giles'version is comparatively low with narrow range of vocabulary,high proportion of long and difficult words,and obvious academic characteristics.In John Minford's version,the data value is moder-ate,the vocabulary is rich in variety,and the information quantity is also moderate.In Mo Ruoqiang's ver-sion,the data value is moderate,the vocabulary density is low,and the overall style of vocabulary is simple and popular.The characteristics of lexical parameters in Huang Youyi's version are the lowest among the five versions,which tend to be short,popular,simple and more colloquial words with low lexical diversity.It is found that the five selected English versions are suitable for different groups of readers,and the"targeted"English translation of Chinese classics can be attempted in the future.
