Tengchow College and the Beginning of Modern Science Education in China
Modern education in China began in the mid-19th century,as the old educational system gradually gave way,and a new educational framework was established by the early 20th century.In this process,Tengchow College,founded by Calvin Wilson Mateer and his wife,played an important leading and demonstrative role.The curriculum and teaching organization of Tengchow College differed significantly from traditional educational methods in China.It emphasized natural sciences and technical education,prioritizing the construction of laboratories and workshops as well as the cultivation of experimental skills and hands-on capabilities of students.The college compiled science education textbooks tailored to students'actual needs and established new principles for compiling modern textbooks.This helped to promote the localization of mod-ern scientific knowledge and technology in China,including mathematics,astronomy,acoustics,optics,natu-ral history,photography,etc.and marked the inception of modern science education in China.
