The Personifications in I am Porcelain, your Buddy:A Cognitive Approach from the Perspective of the Extended Conceptual Metaphor Theory
Documentaries on porcelain serve as one of the important media to shape a nation's cultural i-dentity and promote dialogues among world civilizations. The present paper is a cognitive analysis of the narra-tion of the documentary:I am Porcelain, your Buddy, based on the multilevel and contextual priming view of the Extended Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The paper, employing the Metaphor Identification Procedure(MIP),identifies metaphorical expressions in the narration of the documentary, then from the identified met-aphors selects the personifications with porcelain as the target domain, and then categorizes them for cognitive analysis. The findings are as follows:(1)The personifications concretizing abstract concepts represented by the target domain is the soul of the narration of the documentary;(2)The domain-level schema, together with image and frame schemas, forms the conceptual substrate, while multi-modal expressions of the documentary create contexts, which, through priming, link the concept substrate to the mental space for accessible meaning construction;(3)Throughout the documentary, clear contextual clues have been offered to reduce ef-fectively the audience's cognitive load. The paper intends to help viewers achieve an in-depth understanding of the personifications, and to provide references for translators in their translation of the well-produced docu-mentary for international audiences.
