Investigating Effect of Free Heave Motion of Floating Body on Moonpool Resonance under Wave Action
When the wave excitation frequency is coupled with the natural frequency of the moonpool, the fluid within the moonpool will produce a large amplitude resonance behavior, which can induce dramatic motion of the fluid and the floating body and cause certain safety hazards in the engineering operation.Based on the OpenFOAM® software package, this paper establishes a viscous flow numerical wave flume to study the hydrodynamic behavior of the fluid resonance within the moonpool, which is induced by the free heave motion of the floating body under the wave action. The numerical model is validated with experimental data to ensure the accuracy of the numerical calculations. The results show that there is a double peak phenomenon in the fluid resonance within moonpool for the heave floating body, while there is a single peak for the fixed body. The peaks of wave amplitude response and heave motion response in the moonpool corresponding to the two resonance frequencies of heave system decrease with the incident wave height. The influence of the structure draft is also considered. It is found that the resonance frequency of the heave system decreases with the increase of the draft, and the draft has a significant effect on both the wave response within moonpool and the motion response of the floating body.
