Study on Rapid Determination of Moisture Content in Tobacco Leaves by Microwave Drying Method
For the purpose of precisely determining the moisture content of tobacco leaves, minimizing energy usage, and enhancing measurement efficiency,a standard household microwave oven was employed as a microwave drying device in this study. The objective was to investigate and refine the experimental parameters to swiftly determine the moisture content of tobacco samples. The experimental results showed that there was no significant difference in the moisture content of tobacco samples when measured using the tobacco industry standard method(oven drying method)compared to the results obtained from the microwave drying method. The microwave drying method involved intermittent heating at medium and high power levels, with 4 heating cycles lasting 90 seconds each.Despite traditional oven drying methods being commonly used, microwave drying offered a more energy-efficient and time-saving alternative. In fact, for a single sample, microwave drying could complete the determination process in just 30 minutes, compared to the 100 minutes required by oven drying.Furthermore, microwave drying only consumed 0.12 kWh of energy, whereas oven drying consumed 2.67 kWh.To sum up,the use of microwave drying method for measuring the moisture content of tobacco leaves yields results that were comparable to the tobacco industry standard method(oven drying method).Nonetheless, the microwave drying method offered the benefits of quicker processing time and lower energy usage when compared to the traditional oven drying method.
