Review on Plant Water Use Efficiency and Its Influencing Factors Based on Stable Isotopes
Whether plants can adapt to environmental restrictions depend on at least in part of whether they can coordinate the coupling of carbon and water,by which the water use efficiency of plants can well display the resistance adaptability to environments, especially those poor conditions.Due to the global climate change and increasing human disturbance, the pattern of water shortage has been more serious, which emphasizes the key roles of studying water use efficiency in solving such problems. This paper summarizes the concept and research progress of plant water use efficiency.Furthermore, the study also performed a comparison among methodologies mainly used to identify the plant water use efficiency, especially the applications of the stable isotopes.Additionally, this study discussed the potential factors which might influence the plant water use efficiency, including abiotic factors(including temporal-spatial heterogeneity, water resource, temperature, soil characteristics etc.)and biotic factors(including growth difference, plant functional traits, ecological strategy etc.),by which the study did not found common laws in how such complicated factors influenced the plant water use efficiency, since most factors had stronger collinearity. Finally, the shortcomings on plant water use efficiency was raised, which might extend understanding for relative theoretical studies.
