Lu Xun's monograph named An Outline History of Chinese Literature has caused a lot of controversy. This book first came into being as printed handouts for students at Xiamen University in 1926. At hat time, it was named by Lu Xun himself as An Outline History of Ancient Han Literature. Here, "ancient" refers to the period either from the very beginning to Eastern Han, or from the very beginning to the Sui Dynasty. And by "Han", Lu Xun meant literature composed in Chinese characters. With the rise of studies in ethnic languages and scripts as well as ancient peripheral relics, however, Lu Xun felt the need to rename it is "Chinese". This book, though long neglected, should be recognized as a groundbreaking version of Chinese literary history.
