Should the Youth Marry on Time:The"Social Clock"Mismatching Practices of the Youth with Intention not to Marry from the Perspective of Sociology of Time
As China's modernization progresses,young people's decisions regarding marriage,relationships,and childbearing are shifting from the traditional"single-script"norms to the"multidimensional-script"norms.In this context,probing into the marriage view of the youth with intention not to marry,the reasons behind it,and their decision-making processes becomes crucial to understanding the changes in marriage and family structures during China's modernization.Analyzing the process that young people form the intention not to marry from the per-spective of sociology of time,this paper finds that these young individuals are rearticulating and resisting the linear societal norms.Moreover,delaying or bypassing the significant life event of marriage has become a new phenomenon of subjective practice among Chinese youth.The youth form their"personal clocks"by action strategies such as ex-pression of subjectivity,reset of an appropriate marriage time,and emotion compensation.Overlong working time,rat race,and employment culture jointly result in the youth's intention not to marry.
