Is Kao-tzu Zen Buddhism:A Neo-Confucian Discussion about the Difference between Confucianism and Buddhism
Since the appearance of neo-Confucianism,it has become an important task for Confucian scholars to distinguish the difference between Confucianism and Buddhism. To review the difference between Mencius and Kao-tzu,scholars discovered the theories of Kao-tzu were highly close to Zen Buddhism.Kao-tzu was then consid-ered Zen Buddhism, which became a catchword to attack Buddhism and some Confucianists.Zhu Xi and his disci-ples often related Lu Jiuyuan to Kao-tzu,while Li Cai,Gu Xiancheng,Diao Bao,and Xiong Cilv related Wang Yangming to Kao-tzu.If Kao-tzu was Zen Buddhism, then Lu Jiuyuan and Wang Yangming were also Buddhism.Attacking Kao-tzu became a significant task in clearing heresies in Confucianism and censuring Lu and Wang. However, such a catchword evoked disagreements among Buddhist monks and Buddhists like Shi Minghuai and Zeng Fengyi.Whether Kao-tzu is Zen Buddhism or not has then become a topic of interest in the debate between Confucianism and Buddhism during the Song and Ming dynasties.
