Differences and Causes of View of"Mind"between Zhu Xi and Huxiang School:Based on an Examination of the Dedate in 1172
Around the eighth year of the Qian Dao(1172),Zhu Xi and Huxiang School engaged in a debate on the"relationship between mind and nature",revolving around the object and priority of"exploring your mind"and"knowing your nature".The focus was on how to interpret"emotions shown or latent"in"Zhongyong"and"silent sense"in"Yi Chuan-Series of Rhetoric".Huxiang scholars emphasized the consistency of"silent sense",while Zhu Xi used"silent sense"in more complicated ways.(1)"Silent and motionless"and"stillness"denote the latent status, referring to the latent mind or the latent nature.(2)"Silent"indicates the mental state of"main respect".(3)"Silent and motionless"is used to indicate that there is no movement or static in nature;while"si-lent sense"is employed to illustrate the structure of the mind governing nature.(4)"Constantly silent"signifies the intermittent and temporary manifestation of the mind. The controversy between the two sides is rooted in the difference between the two sets of conceptual models.Hu Hong emphasized the transcendental physical evidence of"body-as-use,"while Zhu Xi introduced the triadic model of Cheng Hao's"Yi Dao Shen"as the metaphysical basis for the theory of mind. The controversy between the two sides is specifically expressed in the controversy be-tween"the function of God"and"the wonderful function of the mind sense of God"on the one hand and the one between"exploring the mind to the fullest to see the meaning"and"using the nature of the body and the mind to form the meaning.
