Brief Overview on Pangxi Zhai Remained Books Catalogue and Its Supplement
Pangxi Zhai was the famous library of Pan Zhiyin(1830-1890),a prominent collector of ancient books in the Qing Dynasty. It used to house a large number of ancient books, many of which were rare and valuable.Even after Pan Zhiyin's death, some of his books were still preserved in Pangxi Zhai.In 1927,Pan Zhiyin's grand-nephew Pan Chenghou and Pan Jingzheng were entrusted with the task of checking the remained books in Pangxi Zhai.Pan Jingzheng compiled a catalog of the books he saw during the checking process, called Pangxi Zhai Remained Books Catalogue and its supplement, which recorded over 430 titles of the books, including their titles, volumes, authors, editions, volume numbers and the state whether they were complete or missing, with some of the book entries marked in red indicating their disposal. There are three inscriptions in the catalog, which summarize Pan Jingzheng's classification and statistics of the books as well as the checking date. From Pangxi Zhai Remained Books Catalogue and its supplement,we can see that Pan Zhiyin's collection in Pangxi Zhai had many valuable editions, and it also shows that Pan Jingzheng's early work on ancient book cataloging had the characteristic of recording and preserving documents.Pangxi Zhai Remained Books Catalogue and its supplement have high research value and can be studied together with another catalog Pangxi Zhai Library Records to help understand the overall situation of Pan Zuyin's Pangxi Zhai library collection.
