Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is one of the microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus(DM),seri-ously affecting the physical and mental health and the life quality of patients.According to the theory of Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM),the heart governs the blood and stores the spirit.Continued disruption of blood flow may lead to blood stasis and insufficiency of blood supply to the eyes,which in turn causes the DR.The impaired function of heart governing the spirit also affects the visual function of the eyes.Many TCM experts hold the view that DR is related to the blood stasis and the function of liver and kidney.While,this paperexplores the etiology and pathogene-sis of DR based on the theory of"heart governs blood and vessels and stores the spirit",aiming to provide new ideas and therapies for clinical dialectical treatment or delay DR.
