Nitrogen-doped carbon dots(CDs)are synthesized using a one-step hydrothermal method using folic acid as the raw material. The prepared carbon dots have good dispersion in water and can achieve full UV absorption of a single carbon dot.Further, the aqueous solution of CDs and aqueous polyurethane WPU solution are blended in proportion, and the carbon dot UV absorber is applied to cotton fabric using impregnation-drying method, and then the finished cotton fabric is tested for UV protection factor, washing resistance and mechanical properties. The experiments show that the anti-UV property of cotton fabrics treated with CDs/WPU increases with the increase of carbon dots. When the concentration of carbon dots is 5 mg/mL,the UPF value of treated cotton fabric can reach 46.3,and the UPF value remaines above 40 after 10 washes, which can reach a high anti-UV level. Moreover, the mechanical properties and flexibility of the treated cotton fabrics are not affected. The results indicate that the prepared carbon dots are expected to be used as a new UV absorbers for anti-UV finish of cotton fabrics.
