Preparation of palm fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites and their mechanical properties
The chemical composition, surface morphology, mechanical properties and infrared spectra of the palm fibres are analyzed before and after the degumming process. And the composites are prepared by hot pressing using untreated and treated palm chips as the reinforcing phase and surlyn thermoplastic resin as the matrix, respectively, and the effects of hot pressing temperature on the forming appearance, tensile and bending properties of the composites are investigated. The results show that the surface of palm fibers become relatively smooth after degumming, most of the gum and lignin are removed, the cellulose content is increased and the mechanical properties are enhanced;the optimum moulding process for the palm chips/surlyn composite is hot pressing at 100 aC,25 MPa and 1 h.The tensile strength is(32.31±8.05)MPa and the tensile modulus is(469.97±86.96)MPa.
