The Impact of Tariff Policies on Trade Structure and Industrial Development between China and the United States——Centered on a Historical Examination of Sino-US Trade from 1902-1936
In recent years,the United States has attempted to optimize its trade and industrial structure through tariff barriers,leading to an escalation of trade frictions between China and the United States.Between 1902 and 1936,China and the United States experienced a series of complex economic interactions,including trade growth and the implementation of protectionist policies.This paper aims to focus on the establishment of tariff policies in the trade relations between China and the United States be-tween 1902 and 1936,and their impact on the development of trade and industry between the two coun-tries through historical investigation.Based on modern China Customs'trade statistics and literature on modern tariff rules of China and the United States,the paper analyzes the phased changes in the trade structure of the two countries during the evolution of tariff policies,and focuses on the impact of tariff policies on the development of light industry and agriculture in modern China.This study from the histor-ical perspective based on examples of China,a representative of developing countries,and the United States,a representative of developed countries,reveals that tariff barriers have not brought long-term substantial positive effects on the economic development of both sides.In the context of globalization,strengthening international economic cooperation,promoting trade liberalization,and promoting healthy industrial development are win-win measures.
