Exchange Favors?Features,Types, and Influencing Factors of Grandparent-grandchild Relation among Chinese Adolescents
Using the 2020 data from the China Family Panel Study, this paper analyzes the features, types, and influencing factors of grandparent-grandchild relation(GGR)among Chinese adolescents. The results show that the feature of weakening with age and the feature of top-down unidirectional are obvious in GGR,but the intergenerational exchange is not obvious. All support-unrewarded,care support-unrewarded,and no support-unrewarded are three main types of GGR.The inequality between grandparents and grandchildren, the alienation of grandparent-grandchild emotions, and the weakening with age are obvious, but the intergenerational exchange theory is inapplicable.Parents are key factors influencing the dimensions of GGR.Parental support to grandparents has an enhancing effect on GGR,while parental support to adolescents has an alienating effect on GGR.The grandparent-parent relation(GPR)and parent-grandchild relation(PGR)are important factors influencing the types of GGR.The influence of GPR follows the principle of intergenerational exchange, and the influence of PGR follows the principle of dynamic equilibrium.Grandparents give favors to grandchildren who do not return the favors, but their parents do.
