The Effectiveness of ChatGPT in Translating China-specific Discourse Text
The accuracy of translating"China-specific discourse"in political texts has become a key factor in communicating China's development achievements and shaping its international image.This paper compares the translation generated by ChatGPT of The Report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China with that of three mainstream machine translation tools—Google Trans-late,Youdao Translate,and DeepL Translate.It has employed BLEU and TER,two automatic evaluation metrics,to quantify the qual-ity of the translations.And human evaluation is also added to gain a more comprehensive insight into their performance.The results in-dicate that ChatGPT exhibits certain advantages compared with the other three translation tools.However,it still has obvious limitations in the handling of ideology,complex structures,cultural-loaded terms,the recognition of metaphor and metonymy,and translation ac-curacy.
