The Construction of Chinese Modern Mathematical Discourse through the Translation of Western Course Books:A Case Study of Li Youmei
In the period of the Republic of China(1911-1949),Li Youmei translated a series of mathematics course books newly-published in western countries.To translate western mathematical terms,Li applied methods including literal plus free translation,in-tegration of traditional Chinese mathematical concepts,conversion of daily words into technical terms,etc.While on the discourse level,he tried to retain the original discourse marks in his translation on the one hand,and on the other,applied the methods of addition,deletion and domestication in order to reconstruct the traditional Chinese mathematical discourse and facilitate the introduction of west-em mathematical discourse into the target cultural system.Li Youmei's translation of mathematics course books makes great contribu-tion to the construction of modern Chinese mathematical discourse and the modernization of Chinese epistemic system.
