In the Xuanquan Han Wooden Slips,people who ride horses to deliver messages were called"Yiqi"(驿骑).They were responsible for delivering urgent and important documents.In a narrow sense,"Yiqi"(驿骑)only referred to those who delivered documents in the postal system,while in a broad sense,"Yiqi"(驿骑)included all the riders in the institutions that were engaged in postal services on the main transportation line.In documents of the same format,"Yiqi"(驿骑)was sometimes written as"Yiqi"(译骑),but the two were not exactly the same.Some"Yiqi"(译骑)were horsemen in the postal system who could speak Chinese and minority languages.They acted as part-time translators while delivering documents.In the books and records of the Pre-Qin and Han Dynasties,there were also some full-time translators,such as"Xiangxu"(象胥),"Yi"(译)and"Yizhe"(译者).They have served as translators for the chiefs of national minority and state agencies or officials.There were relatively few records for full-time translators in the Xuanquan Han Wooden Slips.Therefore,some part-time translators were often used in a large number of national exchange activities,just like"Yiqi"(译骑).Both full-time and part-time translators made important contributions to the national communication and integration during the Han Dynasties.
