Birth of Modern Urban Aesthetics:A Study on Baudelaire's Depiction of Paris
The essence of modern urban aesthetics is the aesthetics of instantaneity and internality.Its products are created out of the internal experience of"curiosity"and"shock",acquired when artists fail to comprehend the anonymous public and the rapidly-degrading products made by modern industries.As the founder of modern urban aesthetics,Baudelaire discovered that Paris,a model of modem metropolis,possessed a beauty of deformity,shadow and melancholy,a set of transient,accidental and present-time temporal aesthetic dimensions,and a brand new heroic spirit that takes the metropolis public as the main characters.He asserted that subjects creating modem urban aesthetics have the spirit of an artist,which is the marriage of the three separate functions and roles of a rambler,a"physician"and a poet.He also revealed that modern metropolis was born out of the contrasting relationship between the Heaven and Abyss,as well as the symbiotic integration of the philosophies of beauty and ugliness;they were created when modem artists living in the specific situation of modern cities adopted the artistic rules of correspondence and coordination.The source of the value of modern urban aesthetics lies in time,change,and the self-consciousness of the present.It has changed the everlasting aesthetics that can be traced way back since the ancient civilizations.
