The activity of"viewing paintings"emerged with the creation of"painting".The so-called"viewing painting"means to observe or appreciate painting,which includes both the beauty of the form and the functional charm of the painting,thus creating aesthetic experiences such as"picturesque","realistic",and"lifelike".Since the Song Dynasty,with the further popularization of"painting observation"activities,many literati introduced poetry and prose"painting observation"criticism into novel criticism,using various"painting observation"comments to praise the"painter's brushwork"and"skillful art"of the novel author,or to appreciate the"artistic conception"and"wonderful feeling"of the novel text.In contrast,the criticism of"viewing paintings"in novels places more emphasis on the techniques of narrative writing,painting theory,and criticism.Its aesthetic evaluation of"picturesque"beauty no longer only points to the relatively superficial"beauty of form",but more to the diverse and dynamic"beauty of spirit".It has unique theoretical value for the construction of narrative ology,character writing,aesthetic poetics,aesthetic culture,literary semantics,and other theoretical methods that are localized in China today.
