Toward a Political Economy of Space:On the Interpretation of Space and Politics
The new concept of space is the central keyword of Lefebvre's new meta-philosophy.The concept of space is not an abstract generalization,but is constructed from one concrete socio-historical practice.Space is political,and politics here of course refers to the broadly defined relations of dominance and servitude that exists in the produc-tion of socio-spatial space.Therefore,to make clear the political nature of space is also to confirm that his theory of space because meta-philosophy is a social critical theory.The logic of capital,which used to run rampant in the fields of production,circulation and distribution in Marx's time,has now fully penetrated into people's daily life in the practice of bourgeois urbanization,and the entire space of daily life has become a site for the reproduction of bourgeois relations of production,and the space has begun to subordinate itself to the value of exchange,and all spa-tial existences have been turned into commodities that can be sold.New political economy is the political economy of space.For Lefebvre,this spatial production,in the sense of the reproduction of relations of production,is the fruit-ful self-defense of today's capitalist mode of production,a defense that constructs the"survival of capitalism".
