Green and Low-Carbon Consumption of the Middle Income Group and the Youth:Empirical Analysis Based on Different Consumption Stages and Different Consumption Fields
Promoting green and low-carbon consumption is of great significance for China's consumption transformation and upgrading, and achieving high-quality development.Transformation of green consumption of is not only con-strained by consumers'economic, cultural, and social capital, but also closely associated with contemporary youth culture, which has in result created new lifestyles. However, green consumption is not limited to green purchasing, and the mechanisms of green consumption in different fields also vary, which has not been sufficiently discussed in existing research.Using data from the 2022 China Urban Low-Carbon Consumption Survey, this paper focuses on the main consumption stages from purchasing, using to disposal, and the main consumption fields such as eating, wearing, and traveling,to examine the characteristics of urban residents'green and low-carbon consumption. It in-troduces two dimensions of socioeconomic status and generation to explain the influencing factors of green consump-tion.The analysis shows that different consumption stages of purchasing, using, and disposal all present differences in class and age cohort. The higher the income, the higher the education level, and the younger the age cohort, the more actively they participate in low-carbon consumption behavior, with the highest percentage of the middle in-come group who is often committed to green purchases. The regression model shows that class has a more significant impact than age cohort on the consumption aspiration for new energy vehicles which relates to the stage of purchas-ing and the field of traveling, while class and age cohort both have significant impacts on second-hand consumption which relates to the stage of disposal and daily consumption. This paper provides important policy implications,em-phasizing the role of the middle-income and youth groups in shaping social and cultural environment, fostering a shared culture of green and low-carbon society, and guiding the whole society to identify with and pursue a green and low-carbon lifestyle.
