Seasonal Analyses of the Essential Oil of Salvia officinalis L. Cultivated in Shanghai of China
The essential oil in leaves of Salvia officinalis L. cultivated in Shanghai for one year and three years isolated by hydrodistillation was analysed at various seasonal period (Summer-August, Autumn-October, Winter-January, Spring-April) by GC and GC/MS. The yield and compositions of the essential oil at each season were notably varied. Thujone (29.53% ~49. 70% ) was found to be the main compound, then followed by camphor (11.70% ~22. 72% ), 1, 8 - cineol (3.39% ~ 12.08% ), viridiflorol(4. 09% ~ 11.49% ), pinene (0.95% ~ 11.19% ), β-caryphyllene (2. 76% ~ 10. 58% ) and β-selinene (2.94% ~ 7.39% ). The highest yield of essential oil was obtained from samples of three year old Salvia officinalis collected in August. The yield of essential oil from the three year sage was higher than that of the one year sage. August was the best harvest time of this plant in Shanghai area due to the high oil content and /or its chemical composition.
