Application of microfluidic technology in biofilm research
Biofilm is a microbial community composed of bacteria and their secreted extracellular polymers.Currently, biofilm culture and research mainly use static culture platforms(such as Petri dishes and well-plate),which lack the ability to accurately simulate physicochemical microenvironments and perform high-throughput in situ analysis of bacterial behavior.Microfluidics,a new technique for processing or manipulating fluids at the micron scale, has been used in biofilm research in recent years and several breakthroughs have been achieved. This paper systematically reviews recent research on the application of microfluidic technology to biofilms and summarizes the advantages, disadvantages, and future directions of microfluidic technology-assisted biofilm research to provide assistance for a comprehensive understanding and extension of the application of microfluidic technology in biofilm research.
