Diabetic retinopathy(DR)is one of the most common vascular complications of diabetes mellitus,charac-terized by retinal vascular leakage,neovascularization and fibroplasia.With the progression of DR,visual dysfunction such as vision loss,visual field defect,shadow before eyes and blindness may occur.Following the theory of ancestors and com-bining with years of clinical experience in acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of endocrine and metabolic diseases,Di-rector Yuan Aihong proposes that DR is located in the eye,both deficiency of Qi and Yin is the root of the disease,and the heat and blood stasis blocking the eye meridians is the key to the disease.She emphasizes that the treatment should focus on the root cause,and replenishing Qi and nourishing Yin should be the treatment principle,which can achieve the effects of regulating both Qi and Yin and treating the disease from blood stasis.In clinical practice,attention should be paid to the principles of proximal acupoint selection,distal acupoint selection and acupoint selection based on syndrome differentiation.The commonly used acupoints include Jingming,Shiqu,Baihui,Cuanzhu,Xiangwuzhen and Guangming.In the treatment of DR with acupuncture,transport needling is attached great importance to make Qi reach the affected area;scalp acupunc-ture is recommended,supplemented by electropuncture;attention should be paid to the idea of guarding against pathological changes when falling sick,and protecting recovering patients from relapse.The treatment of DR with acupuncture can effec-tively improve the quality of life of DR patients,improve or maintain vision,and delay DR lesions.
