Research progress on the correlation between unsaturated fatty acids and depression
Depression is the most common mental disorder characterized by persistent and significant low mood state. In China, the incidence of depression is increasing year by year. This article reviews and summarizes the research focus on the correlation between unsaturated fatty acids and depression at home and abroad in recent years.Studies have shown that the lower serum polyunsaturated fatty acids(mainly omega-3 fatty acids)are associated with the severity of depressive symptoms, and the higher level of serum polyunsaturated fatty acids is associated with the lower incidence of depression and the lower scores of depressive symptom.Monounsaturated fatty acids(omega-9 fatty acids)seem to have no correlation with depression.Lower omega-6/omega-3 fatty acids ratio may predict a better prognosis.Serum polyunsaturated fatty acid levels may be used as reference for predicting the incidence of depression and the severity of depressive symptoms.
