Teaching principles for introductory courses to China based on theories of empathetic narrative
Empathetic Narrative is a mode of narrative which aims at triggering emo-tional resonance through empathetic strategies.Based on experiences as an instructor of in-troductory courses to China,the author proposes some teaching principles for these cour-ses in the light of empathetic narrative theories,which include petty narrative,empathy o-rientation and human universals,forming the mode,objective and basis of teaching re-spectively.It is argued that with these principles introductory courses to China can be transformed from merely presenting information to triggering empathy so that the students could have a better understanding of China and enhanced cross-cultural abilities and global competence.These principles are also applicable to the teaching of courses such as extensive reading,newspaper and magazine reading,and comprehensive courses.
